Obituary for James Dayton Schafer

It is with great sorrow and sadness that after a long battle with cancer, the family of James Dayton Schafer announces his passing on November 28, 2019 in his home surrounded by family. Admired by all who knew him for his deep love and compassion for family, friends and an abiding faith. He possessed a quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor and the gift of being a true and loyal friend. He was very generous with his time and resources for a friend or family member in need.

He was born in Seattle to John and Margaret Schafer on January 11, 1946 the fifth of eight children.
He grew up in Georgetown, lived in Renton for 36 years and Auburn for 13 years. He graduated from Cleveland High School 1964, University of Washington 1968 and Golden Gate University 1981. He owned a CPA Practice, Schafer & Husmoe, located in Burien and retired in March this year. Jim met his wife, Tina, though his sister while they were attending Cleveland high school. They married on July 9, 1966 and together had 3 children.

Jim enjoyed many outside interests including fishing, camping, skiing and travelling. He was passionate about Northwest sports. He attended many games and cheered for the Sonics, Mariners, Huskies and Seahawks. He continued to cheer for these teams until his final days, watching on TV with family members by his side.

He was actively involved in the Highline Exchange Club for over 40 years including serving as President in 1978, 2002 and 2008, Treasurer for over 35 years, NW District Director for 10 years and was the longest running member. In 1992, he received the Exchangite of the Year Award, in 2007 the Distinguished Exchangite Award, and in 2019 the Distinguished Service Award for lifetime of achievements in Exchange Club.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Tina Schafer. His children Tina (Jim) Sypher, Troy (Tova) Schafer, Torey (David) Smith and grandchildren Kayla (Adam) Heffner, Blake and Brooke Sypher, Kylia and Kolton Smith. He was a loving brother to Doug (Sue) Schafer, Darrell (Helen) Schafer, Duane (Judi) Schafer, Dale (Diana) Schafer, Donna (Craig) Jamriska, Diane Schafer, Danette (Brad) Carufel. His godchildren and many nieces and nephew.
